Malta Islands | Sun, Sea & A Lesson in Travel Friendship

Exploring Malta & Its Islands

In August 2024, I traveled to Malta with one of my favorite travel buddies. As someone who loves islands, I had been looking forward to this trip for a long time. We stayed in St. Paul’s Bay, a beautiful coastal area with stunning waterfront views filled with boats. The view from our hotel balcony was nice, but unfortunately, the hotel itself was a big disappointment. It didn’t meet expectations or basic hotel standards. However, after 12+ years of booking hotel stays, this was my first bad experience—so I still consider myself lucky! Thankfully, it didn’t ruin the trip, and we had an amazing time exploring the country.

A Relaxed Island Getaway

While my friend and I are both usually adventurous and adrenaline-seekers, we decided that this trip would be more laid-back and relaxing. We kicked things off with a full beach day at Singita Beach, where the ocean was the perfect temperature for swimming. The beachside restaurant, perched on a hill, offered breathtaking views of the beach and mountains in the background.

Over the next few days, we took a boat trip to the famous Crystal Lagoon in Comino, where the water was unbelievably clear. We also went jet skiing and swam at the beach in Gozo, making the most of Malta’s beautiful coastline.

Overcrowding & Timing Lessons

One downside of visiting Malta in August? It was packed with tourists. I love connecting with locals and experiencing authentic culture, but during peak holiday season, that felt nearly impossible. Next time, I’ll avoid Malta during summer vacation and visit during a quieter period.

Foodie Expectations vs. Reality

I’m usually a foodie traveler, but this time,
I didn’t focus too much on dining. However,
I did have a beef pasta at H Hotel that was honestly better than most of the pastas
I had in Rome
—which is saying a lot!
One of the biggest reasons I planned this trip for August was to experience the International Food Festival in Floriana Granaries, St. Julian’s. This festival showcases dishes from every continent, and as a foodie, I was beyond excited. However, the moment we arrived, I started feeling dizzy and cold. I ended up having to sit down with a picnic blanket (thankfully, I had brought one), while my friend explored the festival on her own.

A Lesson in Choosing the Right Travel Buddy

The biggest lesson I learned on this trip wasn’t about the destination—it was about travel compatibility.

Getting sick on a trip can happen to anyone, and the last thing you need is a travel buddy who is co-dependent, selfish, or constantly needing entertainment. I was so grateful to be traveling with someone who was independent and supportive, making it possible for both of us to still enjoy the trip despite my setback. A huge shoutout to my friend for being the ultimate travel companion!
